Western Civilization 1: Lesson 110

Q: What are the sacraments?

A: According to the catholic church, sacraments are visual representations of the grace of God and the bestowing of it upon believers. There are seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

Q: What is an indulgence?

A: Indulgences are believed by the catholic church to be a way to buy your way out of punishment. One common misconception people have about indulgences is that they have to do with hell (eternal punishment). In reality, they are associated with purgatory, a place of temporary punishment that both believers and unbelievers must endure after death. The catholic church believes that even though Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins, people must still endure punishment for those sins after they die.
